  1. 1. What are your expectations going into engaged scholarship?
I hope to be able to expose the Berkeley community to Poetry for the People and the opportunities available to them to express themselves. Poetry is a great tool for people to go out and find ways to say something meaningful. I hope to learn a lot about Berkeley and web design as well as the open mic events and other poetry readings that I have never before been exposed to.
    2. Have you spent much time off campus since you got to Cal?
I have only been off campus several times since I arrived at Cal last semester. I have been to a rally in San Francisco and other various trips for ice-skating and other excursions. These trips have all been targeted however and I did not spend much time out exploring the surroundings of the campus and the Bay Area. I wish to be able to go out and become more conscience of the needs of the people here and what can be improved to make life better. There are always ways to make improvement to society but they are not possible when the problems are not first recognized and understood.
    3. Are you from the bay area/not enrolled? If so, how does this affect your relationship to ACES?
I am not from the Bay Area, and I am an enrolled student. I am a freshman and have not been living here for very long. This makes me very unfamiliar with the Berkeley community and the activities and needs of the Bay Area. Where I come from in San Diego there is a very different atmosphere and this makes the ACES idea very new and exciting for me. I have so much to learn from the experience, about Berkeley itself and also about the community and how poetry and the arts is such a big part of the area.
    4. Which projects did you select and why?
I have chosen to be on the technology team because this is where I think that my skills would best be served. I am a technologically savvy person and I think that updating/creating a website and tapping into online resources to spread the message of Poetry for the People is where I would be able to make a better impact. In today’s times it is very important to have an online presence and a website that has relevant up to date information. This is where I would like to concentrate my efforts. My other choices were the teaching residencies because I am an outgoing person and would love to share and meet new people.
    5. What are your hopes & fears?
My hopes are that I will be able to learn about the community and be able to see first hand some of the ways the Poetry for the People is affecting people and making an impact. I think that the mission of making poetry and the arts for everyone to express themselves is a powerful one and I hope to see this. What I fear is that my efforts in technology will not appropriately represent the course and the principles of P4P. I want to make it so that people who are researching the subject will get an accurate and full understanding of what June Jordan’s vision in and how we, with the ACES program are being community leaders and helping our neighborhood.

  2. 1. After hearing what all the speakers and STAs had to say about the engaged scholarships, I expect that I will be getting a very eye-opening experience going through it. People of all backgrounds have gone through the program, and said that through it, they have seen, felt, heard, and learned things even at unexpected times. Although I am going into the engaged scholarship with the intention of helping the community, I expect to learn a lot as well, about myself and the community in which I currently reside in.

    2. Although I live relatively close by, I spend most of my time on campus with classes and school clubs. I have volunteered at Le Conte Elementary school and participated in a few philanthropy events in Oakland, but that is the extent of my time off campus.

    3. I am from the bay area and enrolled in UC Berkeley. I think because I live fairly close by, by participating in the engaged scholarship, I feel a bigger impact because everything I see and do hits close to home.

    4. I selected the Technology Team, Promotion Team, and Open Mic projects because I believe they overlap with my interests. In terms of the technology team, I helped manage and design an intranet for Electronic Arts when I interned there, so I think my experience would well match this project. In the past I have also done a lot of flyering, tabling, and advertising for clubs and groups I am involved with on campus, so the Promotion Team also interested me. Lastly, I always thought it would really interesting to attend and/or participate in Open Mic, and this project will provide me with that opportunity.

    5. Similarly to what I expect out of the engaged scholarship, I hope to really go through an experience unlike any other, as well as grow close to the team I am with working on it. I want to be able to hear the voices in my community and create a positive impact on it. I only fear that it will be overwhelming at times, in terms of time management, group conflicts, and not being able to complete everything, but I think this can and will all be worked out.

  3. 1. What are your expectations going into engaged scholarship?
My expectation going into engaged scholarship is that I am exposed to poetry not only from the United States, but also poetry from various different cultures and ethnicities. I then want to be able to connect the poems to events and their environment so that I can better understand what prompted the poets to write what they did.
I also hope that my attending open mics, I can become more connected to my community and be more sensitive to how others feel.
    2. Have you spent much time off campus since you got to Cal?
This is my first year at Cal and unfortunately, I have not had much of a chance to explore off campus. Since I commute from home, I basically just attend class and then head home.
    3. Are you from the bay area/not enrolled? If so, how does this affect your relationship to ACES?
I am from the Bay Area and am enrolled. I am looking forward to attending open mic events around the community. I believe that I will be exposed to new a sector of the community. This will allow me to meet new people, see their points of views, and be able to better appreciate diversity.
    4. Which projects did you select and why?
I am in the Publicity Team. Going in, I didn’t know too much about what I would be doing, but now that I am in the team, I am very excited. I’m excited primarily because I’ll be able to attend various open mics around the Bay Area. I’m looking forward to listening to other people’s poetry and appreciating their styles. Moreover, this requirement will be help me get closer to the people in the class since we can attend the open mics with other students. I hope to meet other people and enjoy attending events with them.
The Publicity Team is also in-charge of posting flyers at different locations. I am glad to be able to get the opportunity to do this because I am not completely familiar with Berkeley (since I commute from home). This assignment forces me to leave the campus and actually look around the city.
    5. What are your hopes & fears?
My main hope is that, even if I am not able to write a beautiful poem, I want to be able to recognize good poetry from less good ones. I want to learn what exactly makes a poem standout and be remembered.
My second hope is to learn how poetry can be used to address various different topics. In the past, I have read numerous poems about love and sadness, but not many political poems or poems about race and ethnicity. I hope this class will expose me to new types of poetry.
My main fear is that I will not be able to write poetry freely, meaning that I will not be creative. I’m an individual who likes structure, and lacks creativity and imagination. This is one of major weaknesses. I fear that this will affect my poetry, but I hope to slowly learn and change over the course of the class.

  4. Tammy,

I completely agree with you that this will be an eye-opening experience. Looking around our class, the students are very diverse. Moreover, after hearing some of the open mics in class, I realize that the students all have very different experiences that they bring to their poetry. So far, I definitely feel like I have learned quite a bit about respecting people and appreciating differences.

COOOL that we are on the same team :) I didn't know that you were a freshman or from SD, but if anything, being in P4P and going through the engaged scholarship programs will make the Berkeley community feel closer than before. I definitely agree with what you said about the internet being an increasingly powerful way to reach out the community, and I'm glad we get to do it together!

  6. 1. What are your expectations going into engaged scholarship? Really no expectations. I am excited about what is to come because I was really unaware of what I was getting into signing up.
    2. Have you spent much time off campus since you got to Cal? Yes. I pretty much spend the majority of my time off of campus. There is always a conflict with my peers because they complain that they don't see me enough.
    3. Are you from the bay area/not enrolled? If so, how does this affect your relationship to ACES? No, I am from Los Angeles. But it doesn't seem to effect my relationship at all with ACES. P
    4. Which projects did you select and why? I selected every project that had to do with promotion's and technology. Primarily because I am good at those things. I felt like I had something to contribute then the other groups.
5.What are your hopes & fears? I don't really call them hopes, because it is up to my will power to make them happen. But i guess my main hope/goal would be to obtain true freedom. In this capitalistic society, I believe that is the one thing we do not have. And I guess my main fear is to be assassinated for what I know.

  7. @ Jayshree

Yea I guess that is something else I would like to accomplish from this course. Not the ability to completely write a good poem, but at least be able to recognize a good one. I am interested in learning more about the technicalities of poetry, because I feel like now I only understand it on a base level.

Tammy, that is so cool that you were an intern at EA!!! I am also glad to see that we share some similar concerns about working together as a group and being able to coordinate effectively. This is the most challenging part of a group project and is what will be most difficult for us. I am glad that we are working together on Technology!

I share you situation about being new to Cal and not making it around Berkeley much. Although you are from the Bay Area and know many things I am happy to be able to explore the different aspects of the community here that I am otherwise unaccustomed to with you. I also feel the same way about not being creative or emotional enough in my poems and not putting enough of 'me' into them. I look forward to continuing to improve and revise my poems with you for the remainder of the year.

  10. 1-What are your expectations going into engaged scholarship?
I suppose I don't have too many firm expectations. I'm going to be on the publicity/promotions team, so I expect to discover new slam and open mic venues and to interact with members of the Berkeley and Oakland communities that I don't often get a chance to on campus.
2-Have you spent much time off campus since you got to Cal?
I haven't spent as much time off-campus as I'd like to (I always seem to get caught up, in work or the ever-present aching for sleep to get as far off campus as I wish), but I think I spend more time off campus than the 'average Berkeley student'. This is because I have to get out of the Berkeley bubble to interact with people in the area as a reporter for the Daily Cal, and because I have friends who don't go to Berkeley but live in the community.
3-Are you from the bay area/not enrolled? If so, how does this affect your relationship to ACES?
I'm not from the Bay Area, and I am enrolled at Berkeley. I think this makes me feel like an outsider in the community, even if I am somewhat familiar with it, and a member of it in my own right. It just feels odd to induce "real" Berkeley residents to come to our reading. At the same time, being able to interact with community members is refreshing, and perhaps more of a treat than it would be if I'd lived here all my life.
4-Which projects did you select and why?
I chose the promotions team because it was the only project I could participate in due to my class and work schedule. I would have loved to be involved in the B-Tech team, because I've taught poetry and led workshops before, but being on the promotions team will be a great excuse for me to get out to readings and mix work with play.
5-What are your hopes & fears?
I hope that I'll be able to convince many people to come share a night of poetry with P4P. I don't think I have any fears about ACES — it's a great program.

Tammy, I completely identify with what you said about ACES helping us to feel closer to the Berkeley community. I really want that.

  11. 1. What are your expectations going into engaged scholarship?

I wanted to just experience Berkeley. Not Cal. But Berkeley city. I wanted to see what the youth were like at B-Tech, if they were any different from me..from the community I come from. I didn't have specific expectations but more so just looking forward to seeing new people outside the Cal bubble.

    2. Have you spent much time off campus since you got to Cal?

I haven't. Besides working/tutoring at other schools in Berkeley, I haven't done much off campus.

    3. Are you from the bay area/not enrolled?
If so, how does this affect your relationship to ACES?

I'm not from the Bay Area so I still feel very touristy here...like it isn't home =( Hopefully ACES can fix this =)

    4. Which projects did you select and why?

I selected B-Tech b/c I like working with youth. I think using poetry as a vehicle to understand history is a hella dope concept. When I was younger, I wasn't exposed to many positive role models and/or people in higher education. The very few 1 or 2 times that I did, it changed my life. I just think interacting with the youth is a very powerful relationship.

    5. What are your hopes & fears?

FEARS: Getting pushed over by the youth. hehe. I'm a pushover in life in general. I get bullied by my little nieces and nephews all the time. But on a more serious note, my greatest fear is not being connect with the students and not providing engaging enough history/poetry lessons for them in their class.

HOPES: To simply get to know these students. To be inspired. To listen to their voices and experiences! To be able to move forward with positive things! =)

  12. @ Tyler:

Hopefully this isn't too nosy, but how come you spend so much time off campus? Are you involved with other activities? And when you say off campus, are u referring to other areas in the East Bay or SF, etc? Sorry just curious!! =)

And similarly like you, true freedom is on top of my list too. And HAHAHAHA I can't believe your fear is getting assassinated. Not to laugh at you, but I would've never thought of that. lol. Most people say stuff like...rollercoasters, bugs, etc. lol.
